If your shoulders feel stiff and stretching isn't doing the trick, the problem usually isn't a lack of flexibility, it's a lack of stability and space in the joint itself. These three exercises target that directly, and are worth trying before you reach for another stretch.

Why Stretching Alone Doesn't Fix Stiff Shoulders

Stiffness in the shoulder is often a protective response from your nervous system, not a true lack of length in the muscle. Stretching can feel good temporarily, but if the joint doesn't feel stable, the stiffness usually comes right back. Creating space and building control in the joint addresses the actual cause.

3 Exercises for Stiff Shoulders

  1. Banded Distraction Rotations: Loop a band around the joint to gently pull the shoulder away from the socket while you rotate the arm, creating space and reducing pinching sensations.

  2. Hanging Rotations with Trigger Release: Hang from a bar and rotate your shoulders while applying light pressure to release trigger points, combining decompression with targeted tension relief.

  3. Arm Bar with Rotations: Lie down holding a light weight overhead and rotate your body around a stable shoulder position, improving stability and making the joint feel safer under load.

How to Use These

  • Start with 2-3 sets of 8-10 slow reps per exercise

  • Focus on control over speed, especially in the rotation portion

  • Do them before training as a warm-up, or on their own a few times a week

Save This Routine

Be sure to save this routine for later and share it with a friend who could use it. A stable, well-controlled shoulder almost always feels less stiff than one that's just been stretched.
