If your hips feel tight no matter how often you stretch, the issue may not be flexibility at all, it could be how the muscles around your hips are functioning day to day. These four exercises target tight hips from a few different angles and tend to make a noticeably bigger difference than static stretching alone.
Why Hips Stay Tight Despite Regular Stretching
Stretching lengthens a muscle temporarily, but if the underlying movement pattern or muscle activation hasn't changed, the tightness comes right back. Combining a proper stretch with drills that retrain how the hip moves gets you a result that actually holds.
4 Exercises for Tight Hips
Hip Flexor Stretch (Proper Way): Releases tightness in the front of the hip and low back when done with correct pelvic positioning, not just a generic lunge stretch.
Dynamic Hip Flexor Stretch: Trains your body to keep the hip flexor relaxed during daily activity, rather than just stretching it once and expecting it to stay loose.
Pigeon Stretch: Targets your largest hip muscles directly, significantly reducing overall tension around the joint.
Hip 90/90: Works internal rotation, a range most people neglect entirely but that's one of the most important for hip health.
How to Build This Into Your Routine
Do all 4 exercises as a sequence, 2-3 times per week
Hold static positions for 30-45 seconds per side
Save the routine and share it with a friend who deals with tight hips too
Stretching Has Its Place, But It's Not the Whole Answer
There's nothing wrong with stretching tight hips, but pairing it with drills that retrain movement is what actually changes how your hips feel day to day, not just in the 10 minutes after you stretch.
