Why Copying Instagram Rehab Exercises Doesn't Fix Your Pain

Not all rehab exercises on Instagram are created equal — and even the good ones come with real limitations once you try to apply them to your own pain. They can be a helpful starting point, but here's what they usually can't do.

Why a Single Exercise Video Falls Short

Most rehab content you see online is built to be generic, because it has to apply to a wide audience instead of one specific person. That creates two problems. First, the exercise isn't tailored to you — your pain and your injury are unique, and a movement that helps one person can do nothing, or even aggravate things, for someone else with a similar-sounding issue. Second, what you're seeing is often just one piece of a much bigger solution: many posts share moves meant for the early stages of an injury, which might reduce discomfort temporarily but rarely address why the pain started in the first place.

How to Actually Use Online Exercise Content

  1. Treat It as a Starting Point, Not a Plan - Use a video as something to try and observe, not as your entire rehab strategy.

  2. Track How Your Body Responds - Note whether an exercise makes things better, worse, or has no effect at all over several sessions, not just one.

  3. Look for Patterns, Not Just Moves - Pay attention to what type of movement helps (e.g., loading vs. stretching) rather than just memorizing a specific exercise.

  4. Get a Personalized Assessment Before Committing Long-Term - A professional can confirm whether what you're doing actually matches what your body needs.

Signs a Generic Exercise Isn't Enough

  • Temporary relief that doesn't last - The discomfort eases for a day or two, then returns at the same intensity.

  • No improvement after several weeks - You're doing the exercise consistently, but your underlying pain or function hasn't changed.

  • You're not sure why you're doing it - You can do the movement, but you can't explain what it's actually supposed to fix in your specific case.

Instagram and other social platforms can absolutely be a useful resource for ideas and education, but a real, lasting solution requires a plan that's actually built around your body, your history, and your specific pain — not a generic video meant for everyone.
