The bench press is a staple exercise in strength training, but too many people make a critical mistake that can lead to injury and limit their progress. If you don’t have the mobility to access a full range of motion, forcing it isn’t the solution—it’s a problem.
The Common Mistake You Need to Avoid
One of the biggest issues we see in the gym is lifters rolling their shoulders forward at the bottom of the bench press just to touch their chest. This compensation doesn’t actually improve strength—it just increases the risk of shoulder pain and injury.
We see the same thing happen in squats, where lifters round their lower backs to reach depth, putting unnecessary stress on their spine instead of properly engaging their hips.
Work With the Range You Have
If you can’t safely reach full depth in a movement, don’t force it. Instead, train within the range of motion you currently have and work on improving your mobility over time. Strength comes from controlled, effective movement—not from pushing your joints beyond their limits.
Improve Mobility, Train Without Limitations
If restricted mobility is holding you back, the good news is that it’s something you can improve with targeted treatment. Addressing mobility limitations will allow you to train properly, reduce injury risk, and maximize your strength potential.
